As much as I love summer, the beauty of fall is undeniable. I just wish that it would slide in rather than arrive overnight as it so often does these days – I’m never quite ready for jackets and umbrellas. Last weekend in the Adirondacks the colors were painterly rather than real – golds, reds, rusts, maroons, bright yellows, and fading greens blossoming among the towering pines and firs. We filled our baskets with all the fall produce we could find – squashes, eggplants, onions, garlic, cabbages and Brussels sprouts, kale, the last of the tomatoes and corn – weeks and weeks worth of rich fall meals. I’m looking forward to braising, roasting, and stewing after a leisurely summer of no-clean-up grilling but know that I’ll be longing for the grill come the middle of winter. For now, let’s all enjoy the crisp cool days and hearty fare that autumn brings!
